To be honest, it is very difficult to spot a machine-made rug when it is next to a handmade rug. Most people won’t really notice unless they are handmade carpet specialists. Some rugs are obviously far more expensive and desirable, and they have a higher value and that is why it is important for one to be able to distinguish between them.
There are two main types of rugs: handmade rugs, which follow an old-fashioned way of making rugs, and machine-made rugs, which relies on modern technology in order to produce rugs faster.
Handmade rugs are also called hand-knotted rugs and they are made completely by hand on a specialized loom. This method is extremely taxing but the end result is worth a lot more. A lot of care is put into the weaving of a carpet and it is a precision that cannot be achieved by ordinary human beings. Because of the care that is put into a handmade rug, the quality is excellent and they are durable. This means that they will last a lot longer than machine-made rugs. However, they are far more expensive than machine-made rugs which is why not everyone buys one.
A machine-made rug is a rug that is made by modern technology. Its production is completely reliant on machinery with very little or no human involvement. They are forged by using large machines called ‘power looms’ which then wrap individual fibers around the foundation threats and presses them together. Because of the low effort that is used in order to produce these rugs, they only last about 20 years if they are well-maintained and taken care of. They are easily replaceable and because they are mass produced they are much cheaper than Persian carpets.
Whichever rug you decide to buy, each one has its own advantages and disadvantages. But if you want to buy a rug that requires no replacement, a handmade rug is your best option.
